What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks.

Each interval is known as a Pomodoro, from the Italian word for 'tomato', after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that Cirillo used as a university student.

How the Technique Works

  1. Choose a Task: Decide on a single task you want to work on. Multitasking is not allowed.
  2. Set the Timer: Set your Pomodoro timer for 25 minutes.
  3. Work with Deep Focus: Work continuously on the task until the timer rings. Do not check your phone or open social media.
  4. Take a Short Break: When the timer rings, take a 5-minute break. Stand up, stretch, or grab a glass of water.
  5. Take a Long Break: After completing four Pomodoros (2 hours), take a longer break of 15-30 minutes to recharge your brain.

Why Does It Work?

The Pomodoro Technique is incredibly effective because it prevents burnout and manages distractions. By committing to just 25 minutes of work, the task feels much less intimidating, which instantly cures procrastination. Furthermore, the frequent breaks keep your mind fresh and creative.
